A Guilty Conscience
Adrian Lam, a magistrate in his 50s, spends his days handling trivial cases. It’s a tedious, but peaceful job, something Adrian thought he would have until his retirement. However, he loses his position after offending the newly arrived executive. In order to make a living, Adrian becomes a barrister again, hoping to make acquaintances with some rich and powerful families.
However, his first case of child abuse doesn’t turn out as easy as it seems to be. In a moment of irresponsible negligence, he indirectly sentences an innocent woman to prison over manslaughter. To right his wrong would mean going to war with the Chungs, a financial tycoon family. Adrian must confront his mistakes, if he is to uphold justice…
The film is not only entertaining and engaging, but also relevant and meaningful. It mirrors the changing political and social situation in Hong Kong, where people are losing faith in the judicial system. It taps into the audience’s hope to see justice prevail. After the theatrical release in Hong Kong, the film achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success. It has become the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of all time.
