One ordinary day, as Seiya stood on a rooftop calling everyone he knew to say “It’s me—thank you,” an extraordinary being descended from the sky: a creature with emerald-blue fur, unlike anything he’d ever seen. This alien, along with its companions, had arrived with a singular mission—to exterminate humanity. Yet through unexpected conversations with the humans they encountered, something remarkable began to unfold—a mutual understanding that challenged their destructive purpose.
Produced to celebrate Nylon Japan’s 20th anniversary, We Are Aliens presents an omnibus of whimsical yet thought-provoking stories about these extraterrestrial visitors. Directed by Japan’s prolific genre filmmaker Ugana Kenichi, the film subverts sci-fi tropes with its cast of plush, doll-like aliens—creatures so adorably harmless they seem plucked straight from a claw machine. Over a few surreal days, these colorful beings cross paths with Earth’s quirkiest and most big-hearted humans, their “mission of annihilation” gradually transforming into a journey of mutual discovery.
With its childlike wonder and tongue-in-cheek humor, We Are Aliens delivers a deceptively deep interrogation of humanity. Playful yet poignant, the film balances levity with quietly moving moments, proving that even the cosmos’ cutest invaders—initially hellbent on destruction—might just become the most endearing aliens ever to grace the screen.
UGANA KENICHI
Born in 1984 in Tokyo, Ugana Kenichi made his feature debut with Ganguro Gals Riot (2016), followed by Good-Bye Silence (2018), Wild Virgins (2019), and Rolling Marbles (2020). His series of short films, Extraneous Matter (2020), screened at over 75 film festivals and won 11 awards, leading to the feature film Extraneous Matter Complete Edition (2021). As a prolific director, he made two feature films in 2023 Love Will Tear Us Apart and The Girls, and two in 2024, namely The Gesuidouz (2024) and We Are Aliens (2024).
