The Way We Talk
看我今天怎麼說
The Way We Talk follows three earnest Deaf youths, each from different backgrounds and life circumstances, grappling with their identities in distinct ways: Wolf takes pride in his Deafness, thriving effortlessly in a silent world; his closest friend, Alan, opts for cochlear implants and speech training, navigating the hearing world with apparent ease. Their paths cross with Sophie, a determined young woman striving to integrate into mainstream society. Though united by their shared experience of hearing impairment, each has carved out their own way of living. Sign language becomes the bridge that connects them—a language of intimacy and understanding.
Yet beneath the surface of their camaraderie, tensions simmer. Confronted by societal hypocrisy and systemic inequity, the trio finds themselves caught in the undercurrents of the Deaf community’s struggles. They need to break through the barriers of sound and silence to live authentically.
Director Adam Wong once again turns his lens on the turbulence and triumphs of the youth. With nuanced performances of the cast, the film carries no condescending pity or voyeuristic gaze; instead, it leaps into the Deaf world with unassuming grace. Some ears hear noise; others hear quiet. The Way We Talk listens to the latter.
