In the final scene of Village Rockstars, the precursor to Village Rockstars 2, young protagonist Dhunu stands in a sunset-lit field, receiving her first real guitar from her mother. That magical moment lingered with director Rima Das, sparking a powerful impulse to continue Dhunu’s story—leading to the creation of a second film.

By 2020, Rima had begun work on Village Rockstars 2, which over the next four years grew into a richer, more layered narrative. Set in a picturesque village in northern India, the film follows teenage Dhunu as she passionately chases her musical dreams. Yet life’s harsh realities test her vigor, compelling her to rediscover the deep bond between music and existence—seeking harmony amid the chaos of growing up. A standalone story, the film explores Dhunu’s evolving relationships with her mother, nature, and her art as she navigates adolescence.

Witnessing Dhunu’s journey has been a privilege. This film is a tribute to young dreamers brimming with talent but constrained by limited resources. The cast, devoid of formal training, delivers heartfelt performances, proving how raw talent can blossom into extraordinary art.

Rima Das, a two-time National Award-winning filmmaker, is celebrated for her indigenous, realistic storytelling—delving into complex relationships, self-discovery, and life in harmony with nature. Village Rockstars (2018) was India’s Official Entry to the Academy Awards and screened at TIFF. Bulbul Can Sing (2019) premiered at Berlinale Generation, earning a Special Mention from the International Jury, while Tora’s Husband (2022) was again selected at the Toronto International Film Festival.
