Montages of a Modern Motherhood
虎毒不

Drawing on her own experience of motherhood, Chan delivers a deeply personal and unflinching portrait of early parenthood in her second feature, Montages of a Modern Motherhood, challenging idealized notions of maternal instinct and sacrifice.

Suk-jing, a new mother, struggles to reconcile the relentless demands of caring for her child with maintaining a sense of self. As she moves through the unending cycle of work, feeding, cleaning, and comforting, the weight of invisible labor and isolation gradually accumulates, pushing her toward the brink of mental collapse.

Taking its title from the proverb “Even a tiger does not eat its cubs,” the original Chinese title of the film deliberately leaves the phrase unfinished as “Even a tiger does no…”, casting doubt on this deeply ingrained belief. With piercing honesty, Chan captures the gap between the joy of welcoming new life and the fear, pressure, and overwhelming burden that follow, revealing the quiet resilience required to endure motherhood.
