All My Sisters
سه خواهر
All My Sisters is a deeply personal documentary in which filmmaker Massoud Bakhshi traces the lives of his nieces, Mahya and Zahra, over nearly twenty years, revealing a subtle yet powerful reflection on gender politics in Iran. Set against the evolving backdrop of Tehran, the film observes two sisters (later joined by the third one) growing up within a close-knit family, following their journey from carefree childhood into the uncertainties of early adulthood.
Compiled from a rich collection of home videos and shaped with careful attention to cultural sensitivities, the film unfolds with an intimate, unembellished authenticity. The early chapters radiate warmth and gentle humor, capturing fleeting moments of playfulness and innocence. As time passes, a more somber undercurrent emerges, particularly as the sisters enter their teenage years around 2022, when the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody ignites widespread protests and international concern. Avoiding overt commentary, Bakhshi instead allows lived experience to speak for itself, offering a nuanced glimpse into the realities faced by young women in a restrictive social framework.
