The Festival

Happy to be back, preparing the second edition of Red Lotus • Asian Film Festival Vienna!

Many things have happened since our first edition, not least a farewell: Andreas Ungerböck, co-founder of the festival and ardent lover of Asian cinema, decided to pass his position on to the next generation. However, of course he will remain a dear friend and supporter of the festival, also as a member of our advisory board.

And yes, the next generation already arrived: It is a very special pleasure for us to welcome Cao Liuying to the team as artistic co-director of the festival. Thank you so much for joining!

As with our first edition, we will be presenting a brilliant film program that celebrates popular Asian cinema as a lively, sparkling mass culture – including a dash of glamour as well as talks with estimated film guests from all over the continent and a glittering opening gala offering the opportunity to immerse yourselves in Asian filmmaking to your hearts’ content.

With its clear concept and two industry professionals at the helm, Red Lotus’s second edition will present 13 feature-length programs in four days at the beautiful Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus located in Vienna’s first district.

Red Lotus is aimed at people who love Asian cinema as well as those who are new to the continent’s cinematographies. Red Lotus is a showcase of Asian cinema and at the same time a hub for communication with, between and amongst the numerous Asian communities in Vienna and beyond.

In its second year, the festival will present a handpicked selection of recent daring as well as successful films from Asia. Furthermore, an outstanding personality in Asian cinema will be given our Lifetime Achievement Award. In the years to come, the program will be expanded, there will be a focus on individual countries as well as tributes to personalities from Asia’s cinematic past and present. The festival will be growing, step by step, together with you, our audience.

Keep in touch, and see you at the cinema!
